The Present

April 22, 2026

April 22, 2026 Brian Nice

Hi everybody, welcome to my blog where I talk about my. present.

I’m gonna dedicate this blog to my friend. He’s going through some heavy stuff. A nasty battle with cancer. But my friend is a fighter.

Hey everybody, Happy Earth Day. You know, my father really embraced Earth Day. He believed the Earth was one living organism and everything that happens on Earth affects everything on the organism we call Earth. The environment has always been very important in my family. My friend here and I were talking about Earth Day and she was telling me a story about Pete Seeger and how her choir is singing The Old Brown Earth by Pete Seeger on Sunday. And of course, I had a story to tell about Pete Seeger. My friend Mark and I used to go up and down the Hudson on the Clearwater. Pete would be singing songs and playing on his banjo. Well, my friend and I used to always sit on the bow sprint on the front of the boat. We hit a big wave and my friend fell into the water. Luckily the chain that goes from the front of the boat to the bow sprint was there and he grabbed it. He was about to go under but I pulled him out of the water. Good thing he was little. Anyway, there’s a net there now. It should probably have a plaque with our names on it. Brian & Mark…

Anyway, Happy Earth Day everybody. Sorry, I went off on a little tangent there. Actually, the reason why I’m doing a blog about the present goes back to my friend who’s really sick. We were talking and I told him how I got through what I went through. We had this crazy race in Track & Field called “The Steeple Chase”. It started out with hurdles, then this crazy water barrier you had to jump over. Then an open run. Hell, they may as well have had a line of people that threw walnuts at you. It was a crazy race and a good way to get injured. But, the reason why I was talking about this race was you, of course, had a time in the back of your mind what you wanted to run it in, but you had to clear each barrier and not think about the future or the past barriers. You had to think about what’s going on at the moment. (Does this make sense?) In other words, don’t think about the future or the past. Just concentrate on the moment. And that’s not easy for someone like me who has ADHD. But you gotta do it if you want to run a good time.

Anyway, that’s it for now. Happy Earth Day everybody - and go plant a tree!

Love and miss you, love, B. Nice

PS The images are matchboxes my father, Don Nice, did. You should check out his website: DonNice.com — my sister manages all his work. It’s pretty cool. Check it out.
